Welcome to Westminster, Maryland! William Winchester acquired around 167 acres of land in 1754, which was initially called White’s Level and eventually became the town of Winchester, Maryland. However, to prevent confusion with Winchester, Virginia, the Maryland General Assembly renamed the town Westminster, Maryland. E. B. Stuart. This confrontation delayed Stuart’s troops from reaching the Battle of Gettysburg. While Westminster, Maryland doesn’t have an official nickname, they are known as having one of the longest-running Memorial Day parades in the nation, which they started in 1868.
