Welcome to Huntsville, Alabama! Huntsville, Alabama is the most populous city in the entire state of Alabama, and it was founded in 1805. When Alabama was admitted as a state in 1819, Huntsville, Alabama served as the first capital of Alabama for a year, before the capital was moved to be more central in the state. Huntsville, Alabama is known as the Rocket City, thanks mainly to Dr. Wernher von Braun and other German-born rocketeers who settled in the area in the 1950s. Since then, Huntsville, Alabama has played a pivotal role in space exploration and rocket research and development.
Since Huntsville, Alabama is known as the Rocket City, it only makes sense to start your day off at The US Space and Rocket Center. Opened in 1970 just after the Apollo 12 Moon Landing, The US Space and Rocket Center claims to be “Earth’s largest space museum!” With more than 1,500 artifacts, exhibits, and simulators, it is definitely one of the most extensive compilations of space and rocket history around!
Before leaving The US Space and Rocket Center, stop in at the Huntsville Botanical Garden located right next door. After lunch, head over to Monte Sano State Park, located on over 2,000 acres on the eastern portion of Monte Sano Mountain.
