Welcome to Auburn, Alabama! Auburn, Alabama is the largest city in eastern Alabama, and is unofficially known as “The Lovliest Village on the Plains” thanks to Oliver Goldsmith’s poem The Deserted Village. Auburn, Alabama was originally inhabited by the Muscogee Creek People, however, during the 1830s they were forcibly removed from the land by the federal government and made to live in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) during the Trail of Tears. The first settlers arrived to what is now Auburn, Alabama shortly after the removal of the Muscogee Creek during the winter of 1836 under the direction of Judge John J. Harper. Judge Harper had a vision of building a town that would be the educational and religious center of the area. By the mid-1840s Auburn, Alabama had not only a primary school, but also separate academies for males and females, and in 1856 the state legislature chartered a Methodist college for men in Auburn, Alabama. This Methodist college would go on to become Auburn University, and it opened its doors to the first students in 1859. In 1892 Auburn University became the first four-year college in the entire state of Alabama to admit women!
With Auburn University at the heart of the city’s rich history, it makes perfect sense to start your day off with a self-guided walking tour of the campus. As you walk the campus, make sure you stop at The Jordan-Hare Stadium. Auburn takes its football very seriously, and Auburn University’s fans can be heard screaming “War Eagle” loud and proud on gamedays. There are several stories behind the Tigers unique battle cry, but the most popular story of how it came to be centers around a football game between Auburn University and Georgia during a football game in 1892. According to the legend there was an old soldier in the stands that day, and with him was his pet eagle that he had found on a battlefield almost thirty years earlier. All of the sudden, the eagle broke free and started circling the field. As the eagle soared around the stadium, Auburn drove down the field for an exhilarating victory! Seeing the eagle as an omen of success, Auburn fans began yelling “War Eagle” to cheer on their team. At the end of the game, the eagle took a sudden dive and crashed into the field dead, but the battle cry lived on. Be sure to check out Auburn University’s website for the other less popular tales of how “War Eagle” came to be. If you happen to be lucky enough to be at the university on a game day, be sure to take part in the “Football, Fans, and Feathers” program hosted by the The Southeastern Raptor Center, Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine birds of prey rehab organization. During the program, you learn about and meet some of the resident birds, which can include owls, hawks, vultures, and eagles!
